‘Could’ve been much worse’: Fire under investigation at Montreal mattress store

By News Staff

Over 60 firefighters from Montreal’s fire department (SIM) responded to a blaze at a mattress store in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie on Wednesday evening.

At around 7:20 p.m., authorities say that they received a 911 call regarding the the two-alarm fire in a two-storey commercial building on Saint-Hubert Street near Jean-Talon.

“Our teams did a really good job because mattress are very volatile,” said Patrick Fournel, a SIM fire chief who was at the scene yesterday. “When we got there there was a lot of smoke.”

“They were able to stop the fire rapidly,” he added.

It took firefighters a little less than three hours to put out the blaze, the SIM explained.

Adding that the commercial and apartment buildings next-door to the mattress store were not affected.

“Firefighters did a great job,” said Fournel. “Because it could’ve been much worse.”

No injuries were reported, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.
