Race for Québec solidaire spokesperson: Grandmont gains support in caucus

By Caroline Plante, The Canadian Press

Of the three candidates vying for the position of male spokesperson for Québec solidaire (QS), only Etienne Grandmont is gaining support in the caucus.

As of Tuesday, the Taschereau MNA had the support of four of his colleagues in the National Assembly: Vincent Marissal, Christine Labrie, Alexandre Leduc, and Andrés Fontecilla.

The two other candidates in the race, Jean-Lesage MNA Sol Zanetti and Dr. Yv Bonnier Viger, have so far received no support within the 12-member caucus.

The race for the spokesperson position, the third in two years for QS, became necessary following the resignation of Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois last March.

Nadeau-Dubois remains the member for Gouin for the time being, but will not be running in the 2026 election.

It must be said that times have been rather difficult for QS over the past two years. Émilise Lessard-Therrien replaced Manon Massé in 2023, only to throw in the towel shortly thereafter, triggering a second race for the female spokesperson position in a short period of time.

Ruba Ghazal was elected to this position in the fall of 2024.

This third race comes at a time when the party is at a low point in the polls. During a debate on October 9, the three candidates promised to do everything in their power to mobilize the left in Quebec.

QS members will be able to cast their votes from November 4 to 8, when Nadeau-Dubois’ successor will be announced at a party convention in Quebec City.

Before becoming a member of National Assembly, Grandmont worked as executive director of Accès transports viables.

He defended the rights of public and active transportation users, in addition to promoting land use planning that would help combat climate change.

A fervent separatist, Zanetti is a former philosophy professor and union advisor. He has also worked as a patient attendant and mental health worker.

Dr. Bonnier Viger, a former regional public health director, is the only candidate who was not elected. He promises to “take care of the party” by meeting with people throughout Quebec.
