2 arrested in Laval distraction theft case

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a distraction theft targeting an elderly woman, Laval police say.

In a release issued Tuesday, Laval police (SPL) explained that a public appeal for information last month led to the arrests.

On Oct. 21, a Laval resident who witnessed a theft alerted police, allowing officers to quickly locate and arrest two suspects who had just stolen a piece of jewellery from an 80-year-old woman.

Police say the arrests follow a recent increase in “distraction theft” cases in the city. The SPL had issued a public warning on Sept. 25 urging residents to be alert and to report such incidents.

According to investigators, the suspects typically approach victims, often seniors, in public areas such as shopping centre parking lots. Under the pretext of asking for directions or offering recommendations, they start a conversation and then thank the victim by offering a piece of jewellery as a “gift.”

During this exchange, the suspects take advantage of the proximity to discreetly steal the victim’s real jewellery, such as bracelets, watches, chains or rings, which are often of significant value.

The two suspects, identified as Nicolai Galatan Oinescu and Isaura Alesandru, both 29, are believed to be repeat offenders active in several Canadian provinces.

They each face charges of theft under $5,000 and breach of conditions.

Following their court appearances, both were released under conditions and must adhere to several restrictions while awaiting further proceedings. Their case is expected to return to Laval municipal court in December.

Investigators believe there may be other victims and are encouraging anyone with information to contact Laval police.

The SPL is reminding the public, especially seniors, to remain vigilant and follow basic safety measures:

  • Stay alert to your surroundings, particularly in busy public places.
  • Be cautious of strangers who attempt to distract you or engage you in unusual conversation.
  • Keep a safe distance from anyone who approaches without a clear reason.
  • Refuse jewellery or objects offered by strangers.
  • Avoid physical contact such as hugs or gestures of thanks from unknown individuals.
  • Report any suspicious situation to police, even if no theft has occurred.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim, or who has information about these suspects, is asked to contact the Laval police information line at 450-662-INFO (4636) or call 911, referencing case number LVL251021-038.
