Hurricane Melissa partly to blame for wet, windy Halloween in Quebec as rainfall warning is issued for Montreal

By News Staff & The Canadian Press

Residents of Quebec can expect wet, blustery weather this Halloween weekend, but Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says Hurricane Melissa is only partly to blame.

The latest forecasts for Montreal includes a rainfall warning that begins today and is expected trickle into Friday as trick-or-treaters are set to roam the streets.

“Rainfall on tap for Halloween,” ECCC said. “Rainfall warnings are issued when significant impacts are expected due to rainfall amounts.”

The wet weather has already started coming down this morning — this is set to be mixed with a daytime high of 6°C while about 10 to 15 mm of rain is forecasted to fall.

Tonight will see rain as well, at times heavy, but this time ECCC reporting 15 to 25 mm.

“A low pressure system from the southeastern United States will bring significant amounts of rain as well as moderate to strong winds to Southern, Central and Eastern Quebec,” the weather agency explained.

“The period of heavy rain is expected overnight Thursday night until midday Friday,” they added.

Friday — Halloween — expected to see a daytime high of 9°C mixed with 20 to 30 mm of that rainfall.

“The rain will ease late in the day on Friday,” ECCC said. “Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Some travel delays are possible.”

A low of 3°C is forecasted for the eerie temperature of Halloween night.

In eastern Quebec, significant amounts of rain combined with strong northeasterly winds are expected on Friday and Saturday.

“The path and intensity of the precipitation (in Quebec) remains uncertain,” ECCC says. “The system that will affect Quebec could also be influenced by the remnants of Hurricane Melissa.”

Though it’s expected to rain as many go door to door collecting candies on Friday — not to fear as Montreal will still be filled with Halloween spirit on Saturday with many activities planned across the city — and the weather is looking hopeful.

A daytime high of 6°C is in the forecast with cloudy skies.

Come Sunday, a mix of sun and cloud is expected and temperatures staying steady at 6°C.

Then the first Monday of November looking like it will come with showers and 9°C.

As for now, ECCC forecasting a mix of sun and clouds for Tuesday with a daytime high of 8°C.

Cloudy and 7°C mixed with a 60 per cent chance of showers for Wednesday.
