Weekend weather: Freezing rain and snowfall warning effect for Montreal

"If temperatures turn out to be just slightly cooler, then we could certainly experience some freezing rain," warned meteorologist Serge Besner looking ahead to this weekend's weather which expects snow and freezing rain.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement warning that two to five millimetres of freezing rain is possible across parts of Laval and eastern section of the island of Montreal.

Freezing rain is expected to begin this evening which will then change to snow overnight. Snowfall amount of up to five centimetres is possible by Sunday morning.

Warning preparedness meteorologist Serge Besner said, “We have a low-pressure system that’s developing over Manitoba. It will be tracking east, southeast ward, generating an area of freezing rain.”

Additionally, Environment Canada says the snow level will split Greater Montreal in two.

The west end of Montreal may receive a mix of freezing rain and rain. Freezing rain will change to snow overnight.

Temperature will remain steady near zero Saturday into Sunday.

On Sunday, there will be periods of snow with up to two centimetres possible. Temperatures could dip to –2°C which with windchill could feel like –8°C.

Forecasters warn that roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery.

Besner noted that early-winter storms often cause problems for drivers.

“If the road surfaces end up becoming below freezing. The freezing rain can accumulate on the roads, making conditions very slippery,” he said. “This time of year, many people are just getting used to winter driving conditions.”
