Quebec City police (SPVQ) are urging vigilance regarding a new method used by fraudsters: they present themselves to their victims using the name and badge number of real police officers.
SPVQ reports that, in order to gain the trust of their targets, the fraudsters in question identify themselves using information about police officers active in its ranks.
The goal is to make the victim believe they have been the victim of fraud. The perpetrator then offers a solution so that their target can protect their valuables.
“It is important to remember that at no time do police officers communicate with citizens with the objective of helping them secure their money or valuables such as jewelry,” the SPVQ said in a statement released Monday.
“They will never show up at their homes to collect money or valuables.”
The police force also reminds people not to trust what is shown on their phone’s display, as tools can be used by fraudsters to personalize it.
“If you have any doubt, hang up and verify the authenticity of the call by contacting the SPVQ’s non-emergency line yourself at 418 691-6911,” advises the SPVQ.
The SPVQ says it has opened nearly 300 cases of fraud by the fake representative since the beginning of the year.
Last summer, the Sûreté du Québec also reported that fraudsters were posing as police officers to deceive their targets.
