Time to get those winter tires on, Quebec deadline Dec. 1

The official deadline of Dec. 1 to change to winter-ready tires in Quebec is fast-approaching.

While Montrealers scrambled to get their winter tires over the past few weeks as winter weather came early this year, the penalties for non-compliance will officially kick in from Dec. 1.

The province’s Highway Safety Code requires all vehicles registered in Quebec, including rentals, to be equipped with winter tires from Dec. 1 to March 15 inclusively.

Drivers who fail to comply will face fines between $200 and $300.

“However, because spring conditions can be variable, it is recommended that you wait until a few weeks after the end of this period to install your all-season or summer tires,” according to the Quebec government.

A tire designed for winter driving must have the mark indicating so, or be studded in order to be compliant.

The requirement applies to all motor vehicles registered in the province, including rental vehicles – but does not apply to trailers, heavy vehicles, farm machinery.

The auto-insurance board (SAAQ) may grant a seven-day exemption through an application on its website SAAQclic.
