The start of the fourth strike by maintenance employees of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will be postponed for two days, following a decision by the Labour Tribunal that deemed the strike notice that had just been sent non-compliant.
This strike will take the form of a refusal to work overtime and begin Dec. 11 – ending Jan. 11.
The union representing the 2,400 maintenance employees, affiliated with the CSN, had sent a notice on Nov. 27 regarding an “overtime strike” to take place from Dec. 9 to Jan. 11.
However, the Tribunal ruled this non-compliant due to a question of respecting deadlines.
This strike notice was issued concurrently with the previous notice, which concerned a strike from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28. Even though that strike had been called off as early as Nov. 12, it was initially scheduled to last until Nov. 28. However, the new strike notice was sent on Nov. 27, which the Tribunal deemed too early.
The maintenance workers’ union therefore issued a new strike notice Monday evening. Instead of starting on Dec. 9, it will now begin on Dec. 11 and last until Jan. 11.
