Second agreement in principle reached for Quebec road traffic controllers

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Quebec’s road traffic controllers have finally ratified their second agreement in principle reached with the government regarding the renewal of their collective agreement.

La Fraternité des constables du contrôle routier held two meetings of its members on Tuesday and Wednesday. They voted 94.5 per cent in favour of the agreement. The agreement was reached with the Treasury Board and Quebec Highway Patrol, which is part of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), last Thursday night.

This is a second agreement in principle for the Brotherhood, since the one last spring was rejected by members, in a proportion of 53 per cent.

The parties had resumed discussions after the union surveyed its members to find out what they disliked about the initial agreement in principle.

This issue of the collective agreement for road traffic controllers is separate from that of the carrying of weapons by the same controllers, although the carrying of weapons is considered a matter of health and safety at work, given their duties.

Quebec announced last October that they would indeed be armed at work.
