Body found under balcony after accidental fire in Longueuil

A body was found under a balcony following a fire in Longueuil, in the Montérégie region, late Saturday night.

“Shortly before 11 p.m., the Longueuil Police Department (SPAL) was called to assist the Longueuil Fire Department (SSIAL) with a fire under the balcony of an abandoned building located on Saint-Charles West Street in Longueuil. Upon arrival, SSIAL members found an unresponsive body,” explained SPAL spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and remains unidentified.

“The SPAL can confirm that the fire was accidental at this stage of the investigation,” the police force announced on its Facebook page in the middle of the afternoon, adding that “traffic has been restored, and the scene has been cleared.”

Saint-Charles Street West was closed to traffic between Saint-Jean Street and Saint-Sylvestre Street while the investigation was underway.
