‘Lights on Boischatel’ makes grand return with magical Christmas display in Pierrefonds-Roxboro

"We like to see kids outside just dancing, laughing and playing," says Robert Wright, creator of the decade-long Christmas light display that's been illuminating his house on Boischatel Street almost every year since 2015. Corinne Boyer reports.

For more than a decade now, devoted family man and Christmas lover, Robert Wright, has been filling the hearts of families and visitors with his dazzling and astounding Christmas light display.

Located on Boischatel Street on Montreal’s West Island in Pierrefonds-Roxboro, the light show promises to fill the season with fun that can be enjoyed either from the comfort of a car or on foot.

Now, after a two-year hiatus, he’s made a grand comeback with a brand-new display that’s been running throughout the month of December.

“It was really sad to lose the ability to do it for a couple of years when we were unable to. So this year coming back, it’s just, it’s once again we get to see the kids, and we get to have the fun, and it’s just, it warms my heart to be able to do this for the community,” said Wright.

“My favorite thing is all the little children that come around to watch it, just seeing them bounce up and down and have a great time, it just warms my heart so well,” concurred his son, Alex Wright who was enlisted to help his dad this year.

This year’s edition features more than 10,000 sets of lights, synchronized to music broadcast from the radio and to popular Christmas songs like “Dominic the Donkey” as well as new additions from the Wicked Soundtrack.

“The songs we try to pick are family-friendly songs,” Robert added. “We look at the movies that are out in the year, we look at a lot of Disney stuff, the stuff that kids are going to bounce around to, less on the traditional side and more on the Disney and family fun side.”

Wright states they’re promising to play the three-hour light show every night from 6:00PM to 9:00PM up until Christmas.

Also making an appearance once again this year, is Santa’s mailbox, which Wright says he made years ago when his children were little after the city had removed mailboxes in the area.

“I wanted to let my son mail a letter to Santa, but you’d just go up to a big generic mail slot and it wasn’t special for me, so I purchased a big mailbox so that kids could put a mail or a letter to Santa in a real mailbox and give them that feeling,” Wright explained.

He and his team will be hard at work sending out replies from Santa to those who got their letters in before the official Dec. 14 deadline.

And according to Wright, Santa’s mailbox remains as popular as ever, as he says they’ve received about 100 letters to Santa from children all around the neighbourhood.

“If you’d like to find out more of how this all works, you can check out our Facebook page, Lights on Boischatel!” said Alex Wright.
