What’s open and closed in Montreal on New Year’s

As Montrealers ring in 2026, many businesses and services will be operating on reduced hours or closed entirely on New Year’s Day, making it important to plan ahead.

On Jan. 1, most federal and provincial government offices, banks, Canada Post, schools, libraries, shopping malls, the SAQ and SQDC will be closed. Large grocery store chains will also shut their doors for the day.

Some essential services will remain available. Pharmacies, depanneurs, gas stations, hospitals, movie theatres and public transit will continue to operate, though often on modified schedules. Public transportation will run on a holiday timetable, with extended metro service overnight on New Year’s Eve to help people get home safely.

For last-minute errands, many grocery stores will close early on New Year’s Eve, typically around 5 p.m. Pharmacies and convenience stores are expected to have limited hours on New Year’s Day, while 24/7 options like depanneurs and cashierless grocery stores will remain open.

Residents are encouraged to check store hours in advance to avoid surprises as the city transitions into the New Year.
