Frigid start to new year in Montreal, cold temperatures to persist through the week

It’s been a brutally cold start to the new year, and frigid temperatures will continue through the weekend. Montrealers woke up Friday to a wind chill of minus-29 Celsius.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of minus-13 C and a low of minus-19 C. By midday, temperatures will fall to minus-9 C, and wind chill will make it feel as cold as minus-21 C in the afternoon.

Saturday is expected to be mainly sunny, with a high of minus-14 C and a low of minus-18 C. Wind chill could make it feel like minus-28 C in the morning, with a risk of frostbite on exposed skin. Nighttime will see increasing cloudiness and a low of minus-18 C, with wind chill near minus-25 C.

Sunday’s forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of minus-15 C and a low of minus-22 C overnight.

Cold temperatures persist Monday, when Montrealers return to work. Periods of snow are expected, with a high of minus-15 C and a low of minus-15 C at night.

Warmer conditions are expected for the rest of the week. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, with a high of minus-10 C and a low of minus-6 C at night. Wednesday brings periods of snow, with a high of minus-1 C and a low of minus-5 C overnight. By Thursday, Montreal should see a mix of sun and cloud with a high above freezing at 1 C.

Pedestrians are urged to be careful over the weekend. Icy surfaces have already led to many falls, with emergency responders treating fractures and concussions.
