While the month-long strike by 2,400 STM maintenance workers is set to end next weekend, no date has been set for the resumption of negotiations.
However, on Monday, the Société de transport de Montréal said its negotiating team was available to negotiate “even during the holiday season.” There have been no fewer than 120 meetings, six months of mediation, and 45 days of conciliation, according to the transit agency.
The strike, which began Dec. 11, takes the form of a refusal to work overtime and will end Jan. 11 at 11:59 p.m.
As of Jan. 5, the STM said 1,320 vehicles were needed to provide service and that there was a shortage of roughly 100 buses to offer full service.
This is the fourth strike by the union, which is affiliated with the CSN. Its members went on strike for the first time in June, a second time in September–October, and a third time in November.
In the meantime, the STM reached agreements with three other major unions: the largest, representing 4,500 bus drivers and metro operators; the second largest, representing 1,300 administrative and technical employees; and, most recently, the third largest, representing 800 professionals, all affiliated with the FTQ.
