Montreal’s iconic old Molson Brewery building was graffitied with extra letters over the weekend.
Groupe Montoni, which co-owns the building, told CityNews the “act of vandalism” appears to have happened during the night from Friday to Saturday.
“At this stage, there is no indication of theft—only this isolated act,” the real estate developer said in a statement Monday.
“The site remains secured according to the highest standards, and we continue to uphold these measures at all times. This type of incident, whether artistic or not, is regrettable, especially when it affects a heritage landmark.”
The building’s exterior saw new letters added to form the words “Kong” and Sluk.”
The meaning of the extra letters was not immediately clear, though the names appear to be graffiti tags.
Groupe Montoni says it filed a police report Saturday. Montreal police (SPVM) would not confirm to CityNews if the vandalism was reported.
The developers also say a “specialized anti-graffiti firm” was on site Sunday to “assess the appropriate methods for removing the graffiti while preserving the heritage character of the site.”
