Quebec filmmakers explore isles of Sicily, Sardegna in latest documentary

"It's not a regular documentary. It's more like a personal movie from us," said Martin Généreux about his travel documentary 'Sicile et Sardaigne, les îles italiennes' - a journey into the heart of Italy with his partner. Teresa Romano reports.

The ruins of Agrigento. The tranquil coast of Cefalù. The turquoise waters of Sardegna. An erupting Mount Etna.

Those are just some of the picturesque locations explored by Quebec filmmakers Martin Généreux and Michèle Deguise in their latest travel documentary.

“Sicile et Sardaigne” takes the couple to the heart of Italy’s famous islands – including Procida and the Aeolian Islands – for a classic mix of history, culture and food.

“We’re bringing Italy everywhere, especially Sardegna and the turquoise water in January when it’s cold or snowy,” Deguise said.

“We are a big team of two, and we are travelling the world to try to reach the people. Really, what’s important for us is not only a documentary of the main places that you can visit, but really the people and try to tell the story beside that.”

It’s the fourth documentary featuring Italy from the travelling Quebec couple whose films are produced under the banner “Les Aventuriers Voyageurs.”

“It’s not a regular documentary,” explained Généreux. “It’s more like a personal movie from us. It’s a movie on Italy from our personal eyes. So it’s like you were sitting in the back of our car. So you come with us, it’s really immersive.”

An atypical documentary therefore called for an atypical movie screening. Before the documentary was shown Sunday at Cinéma Beaubien, people danced and sang thanks to Montreal singer-songwriter Marco Calliari, who performed at the venue.

“It’s a full house. It’s a great pleasure for me,” said Calliari, whose music has for years been a bridge between Quebec and Italy. “My work is mainly in Italian, so I can say this is a drug for me in the sense that I love people that love Italy and I make them like it even more. So for me it’s having friends, having a team, movie, music, great people, and just fun, and for me that’s Italy.”

“It’s the best country, the best place to eat food,” added Généreux. “Yeah, of course, I’m Italian in my heart and in my stomach.”

Cinéma Beaubien will present a second screening on Wednesday. The documentary will also be featured in different movie theatres across Quebec until Feb. 11. A full list is available on the couple’s website.

“There’s 50 movie theatres around Quebec,” said Deguise.

“Come with us with all your smile and you’re going to be happy.”
