PLQ leadership race: another endorsement for Charles Millard

By Thomas Laberge, The Canadian Press

Quebec Liberal leadership candidate Charles Millard has just received the endorsement of Vaudreuil MNA Marie-Claude Nichols. He now has the support of all elected members of the Liberal caucus, with the exception of officers.

“I am deeply honored to be able to count on the support of colleagues who are familiar with the realities on the ground and the expectations of Quebecers. Marie-Claude Nichols’ arrival on our side strengthens our team and our common desire to build a Quebec that works for the economy, for services, and for the regions,” said Milliard in a press release.

Apart from Milliard, only Beauce farmer Mario Roy has expressed interest in the race.

However, Roy still has a significant debt from the last leadership race and must raise $15,000 in donations by Feb. 13. The task ahead is therefore daunting for the 32-year-old, who lacks name recognition.

It is therefore likely that Roy will not qualify for the race, which would leave the way open for Milliard, former chief of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce.

Millard finished second in the race won by Pablo Rodriguez last June. Roy finished in fifth place.

Rodriguez resigned in December following allegations related to the financing of his leadership campaign.
