Extreme cold, frostbite warning to start the weekend in Montreal

“Added an extra stress level,” said Alexandre Sapone, chief of operations for Urgences-santé, about the increase in calls for falls from the freezing rain and strong winds that hit Montreal on Monday. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

Freezing cold alerts swept across the country on Friday morning, with some regions expecting wind chill temperatures of -50°C, and Montreal is not expected to be spared over the weekend.

The cold weather is expected to last from Friday evening until Sunday morning. “It will be windy, with wind chill values ranging from -35 to -40 at night,” said the Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud with 40 percent chance of flurries in the afternoon.

Temperature-wise daytime will see a high minus-9 Celsius, but with wind chill it will feel like minus-20 C. Extreme cold kicks in tonight with a low of minus-24 C and a wind chill of minus-35 C. Gusts of up to 40 kilometres are possible through the day.

Environment Canada warns of risk of frostbite.

A colder but brighter weekend is in store. Saturday is forecast to be sunny, with daytime highs near minus-17 C and a low of minus-23 C. With wind chill, Saturday morning will feel like minus-36 C and minus-27 in the afternoon. Environment Canada warns of risk of frostbite.

Sunday will snow returning with both high and low at minus-16 C.
