Chicoutimi byelection: Tricia Murray to represent PLQ

By Caroline Plante, The Canadian Press

On Monday, the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) announced its candidate for the byelection in Chicoutimi. She is political attaché Tricia Murray.

A native of Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, Murray had already run as a candidate for the QLP in the 2022 general election in the riding of Lac-Saint-Jean.

She was defeated by farmer Éric Girard of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), finishing fifth behind the Québec solidaire (QS) candidate at the time, Elsa Moulin.

“In 2020, after being a victim of sexual exploitation, Tricia chose to transform a deeply traumatic experience into a catalyst for action,” according to biographical notes provided by the party on Monday.

“She testified with strength and dignity before a parliamentary committee, actively contributing to efforts to improve assistance for victims of criminal offenses,” the notes added.

Murray will face Marie-Karlynn Laflamme of the Parti Québécois (PQ), Catherine Morissette of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ), Francis Tremblay of the CAQ, and Jeanne Palardy of QS.

Laflamme is vice-rector of the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC), while Morissette is the former mayor of Saint-David-de-Falardeau.

Tremblay, who is 24 years old, is a master’s student at UQAC, and Palardy comes from the community sector.

Chicoutimi voters will go to the polls on Feb. 23. Before falling into the hands of the CAQ in 2018, the riding of Chicoutimi had long been a PQ stronghold.

This by-election will fill the seat left vacant on Sept. 4 by former Minister of Municipal Affairs Andrée Laforest.
