Quebec research shows AI threatens jobs dominated by women

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Jobs often held by women and by workers with university training are more exposed to artificial intelligence than others, the Quebec Institute of Statistics indicated on Tuesday.

In fact, 71 per cent of jobs held by women are in professions highly exposed to artificial intelligence. This is the case for only 49 per cent of jobs held by men.

This is explained by the fact that women more often hold jobs in the service sector, while men more often work in production jobs.

Similarly, jobs requiring university training are more exposed, since they require greater cognitive skills, rather than manual ones.

In general, 2.7 million jobs were considered to be “highly exposed” to artificial intelligence in Quebec in 2024, representing 59 per cent of jobs, notes the ISQ.
