Potential strike for some Quebec maple syrup workers

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Around a hundred workers could launch a strike at Citadelle, in Plessisville, a cooperative where maple syrup from several producers is bottled.

The hundred or so workers, members of the United Steelworkers union, affiliated with the FTQ, already have their mandate for a general and unlimited strike in hand, adopted by a proportion of 85 per cent.

Late Wednesday afternoon, union members will vote on a comprehensive and final offer from the employer. A rejection of this offer by the members would trigger an unlimited strike, the United Steelworkers union announced.

However, the president of the local branch, Marc Jalbert, has already stated that “what is on the table does not meet the members’ expectations. This has been expressed very clearly. The negotiating committee therefore does not recommend the adoption of this offer.”

Contacted by email, the employer Coopérative Citadelle had not yet commented at the time of writing.
