By The Canadian Press

A child was in critical condition Thursday night after being involved in a two-vehicle collision in Sainte-Thècle, Mauricie.

Police were called to respond to an accident that occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Route 153, also known as Chemin Saint-Georges, said Marc Tessier, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

According to initial reports, the driver of the vehicle, which was travelling southbound, lost control of her vehicle on a curve, before colliding with a car coming from the opposite direction.

The driver of the vehicle that skidded was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

A young child who was also in the car is in critical condition, and there were fears for his life in the evening, Tessier said.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries that are not life-threatening.

“According to initial indications, the slippery road surface could be one of the factors in the loss of control,” the spokesperson stated.

The road was closed to traffic to allow police to analyze the scene and understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.
