Freezing rain warning for Montreal

A burst of freezing rain across the Greater Montreal area early this morning is creating treacherous conditions, with officials warning of slick roads and a difficult morning commute.
The system is expected to begin as freezing rain or snow before shifting to plain rain later in the day as temperatures rise above zero. In the meantime, 2 to 4 millimetres of ice could accumulate, leaving streets, highways, and sidewalks coated in a dangerous glaze.
Motorists are being urged to slow down and allow extra time, as the icy buildup is likely to have a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Pedestrians should also take care, as untreated surfaces may be especially slippery.
Conditions will change again tonight, with rain turning to flurries near midnight before ending overnight. Winds will pick up from the northwest, gusting to 40 km/h, while temperatures plunge to minus-6 Celsius, bringing a wind chill near minus-13 C.
Friday will see clearing skies but colder air lingering, with a high of minus-1 C. The weekend remains chilly, featuring a mix of sun and cloud on Saturday and a 60 per cent chance of flurries on Sunday with a high near plus 5 C.
By Monday, a gradual warm-up begins, bringing a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of showers and a high of 9 C. Cloudy periods continue into the night, along with a chance of showers and a low of minus-6 C.
Officials advise residents to stay alert to changing conditions and check for updates as the system moves through the region.
