Montrealers are seeing another example of border enforcement at work after officers intercepted a significant quantity of suspected cannabis at the airport.
The Canada Border Services Agency says its officers at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport seized 37.5 kilograms of suspected cannabis from a traveller.
A Portuguese national was arrested by CBSA officers on Jan. 22, 2026, and handed over to the RCMP.
According to the agency, the drugs were discovered during routine screening, which can lead to more targeted searches when irregularities are identified. In this case, a detector dog was used as part of the inspection.
All people and goods entering Canada are subject to inspection. Officers rely on a combination of risk assessment, intelligence and technology to determine when a more thorough search is required.
On Feb. 2, 2026, at the Montreal courthouse, the individual pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
