Quebec police participate in nationwide road safety operation targeting distracted and reckless driving

Police services across Quebec, in collaboration with Contrôle routier Québec, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and the Gatineau Police Service, will step up enforcement efforts from May 1 to May 7, 2026, as part of a coordinated nationwide road safety operation.
The initiative targets distracted driving and reckless behaviours that authorities say violate the Highway Safety Code and put road users at risk.
Focus on unsafe driving behaviours
Police say reckless driving includes a range of actions that can endanger public safety and disrupt traffic flow.
Officers will be particularly focused on violations such as failing to obey traffic controls, including stop signs, red lights, school bus signals and yield signs.
Other targeted behaviours include unsafe driving actions such as illegal passing and following other vehicles too closely.
Distracted driving a key priority
Distracted driving, particularly the use of cellphones while behind the wheel, will also be a major focus during the operation.
Authorities are reminding motorists that failing to signal intentions, including not using a turn signal, is a violation of the Highway Safety Code.
They note that using a turn signal is mandatory and helps prevent collisions by allowing other drivers to anticipate movements.
Coordinated national effort
The operation is being carried out in partnership with the Association of Chiefs of Police of Quebec, the Sûreté du Québec, Contrôle routier Québec, the Gatineau Police Service and the SAAQ.
Officials say the coordinated approach is intended to reinforce safe driving habits and improve compliance with traffic laws across the province.
