Laval police seek public’s help in 2024 murder attempt case

Laval police (SPL) are asking for public’s assistance in the investigation into the attempted murder of businessman Ali Chaaban in 2024.

SPL is setting up a command post Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the parking lot on 1690 Boulevard de l’Avenir.

On Feb. 9, 2024, just after 1 p.m. Laval police received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots being fired at a commercial parking lot. When police officers arrived, they found 33-year-old Chaaban with gunshot wounds.

Police believe that the incident was part of an extortion attempt.

“The victim, Ali Chaaban, escaped without serious injury. One of his businesses was subsequently targeted twice in acts of violence before ceasing operations,” SPL said in a press release Wednesday.

Antika restaurant and lounge was targeted by a gunfire on Feb. 14, 2024 and then by an arson attack on March 22, 2024. One person was arrested following the gunfire incident.

SPL says its Crimes Against Persons Squad has established links between various people involved and are continuing the investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the attempted murder or any extortion-related cases by visiting the command post.
