Congestion expected across Montreal as Grand Prix weekend begins

Mobility Montréal is advising road users to plan their trips carefully for the weekend of May 22 to 25, 2026, as increased traffic tied to the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada is expected across the region.
While no major highway closures are scheduled on Montreal’s expressway network due to the Grand Prix, officials say congestion is still expected on key routes, particularly on the Jacques-Cartier and Samuel-De Champlain bridges.
Drivers are also encouraged to consider public transit when travelling to downtown Montreal and Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Congestion expected around major bridges and key corridors
Mobility Montréal is warning that traffic delays are likely on several major arteries, including:
- Jacques-Cartier Bridge
- Samuel-De Champlain Bridge
- Route 132
The organization is urging motorists to anticipate heavier-than-usual traffic linked to Grand Prix-related activity throughout the weekend.
Traffic adjustments on Victoria Bridge
Special lane configurations will be in place on the Victoria Bridge throughout the weekend:
Friday
- 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.: 1 lane toward Montréal
- 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.: 1 lane toward the South Shore
- After 10:30 a.m.: 1 lane in each direction
- No PM peak configuration
Saturday
- 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.: 2 lanes toward the South Shore
- After 10:30 a.m.: 1 lane in each direction
Sunday
- 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: 2 lanes toward the South Shore
- After 11:30 a.m.: 1 lane in each direction
Major closure in Vaudreuil-Dorion
From Friday at 8 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., the Route 340 (boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes) will see a closure of both exit and access ramps to Autoroute 30 eastbound.
Detour routes
For access toward A-30 east:
- Continue via R-340 east
- Henry-Ford Street
- R-342 East (Harwood Road)
- A-30 west ramp toward the A-20/A-30 interchange
Alternate route:
- Montée Labossière
- R-342 West (Harwood Road)
- Montée Cadieux
- Rue F.-X. Tessier Street and Joseph-Carrier Street
- A-40 west ramp and exit 32 toward A-30 east
For access from A-30 east:
- Exit 5 (A-20)
- A-20 east ramp
- R-342 west (Harwood Road)
- Henry-Ford Street
A separate reminder notes that on Route 340 east, between Chemin de la Petite-Rivière and the A-30 overpass, one of two lanes remains closed until late November.
Major infrastructure and roadwork projects ongoing
Autoroute 40 east — long-term reconstruction begins
Starting May 24, major rehabilitation work begins on Autoroute 40 east between the Anjou interchange and the Charles-de Gaulle Bridge.
The multi-year project, expected to continue until late summer 2028, includes:
- Concrete slab repairs
- Installation of precast slabs
- Joint repairs
- Surface durability and grip improvements
Autoroute 640 asphalt work resumes
On May 25, asphalt rehabilitation resumes on Autoroute 640 between Autoroute 15 and Chemin du Bas-de-Sainte-Thérèse in Blainville.
The project, which began in 2025, is scheduled to continue until the end of June and aims to improve safety and driving comfort.
Autoroute 520 overpass reconstruction — new phase
Since May 20, reconstruction work on the Autoroute 520 overpass over 43rd Avenue has entered a new phase.
This change will result in traffic disruptions on Chemin de la Côte-de-Liesse in both directions.
Autoroute 15 reserved lane project continues
Since May 10, work has resumed on the development of a reserved lane on Autoroute 15 between Boisbriand and Mirabel.
A full closure of a portion of the reserved lane near Chemin Côte Saint-Pierre in Mirabel will last approximately six weeks, while additional construction continues between Boisbriand and Blainville.
Harwood Boulevard intersection upgrades in Vaudreuil-Dorion
Work that resumed on May 11 at the intersection of Boulevard Harwood (A-20) and Rue Bellemare will continue until August.
The project includes:
- New turning lanes
- Traffic signal installation
- Lighting improvements
The goal is to improve safety and access to the Sûreté du Québec station and surrounding streets.
Autoroute 13 south reconstruction in Laval
Since May 18, reconstruction work has resumed on a section of Autoroute 13 south between Boulevard Dagenais Ouest and Autoroute 440 in Laval.
Traffic remains open, but lanes are being shifted and reduced until the end of September.
Culvert replacement on Autoroute 640 west
Since May 19, a two-way traffic configuration has been in place between Saint-Joseph-du-Lac and Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac for culvert replacement work.
The setup maintains one lane per direction for approximately 10 weeks.
Route 116 resurfacing work
Since May 13, nighttime asphalt work has resumed on Route 116 between Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Longueuil, including ramps between the affected limits.
The project is expected to continue until mid-October.
Autoroute 31/40 interchange reconstruction in Lavaltrie
Since May 18, reconstruction has begun on the Autoroute 31 overpass above Autoroute 40 in Lavaltrie.
The project includes demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new bridge, with impacts expected through the end of December. Work will pause during winter and resume in spring 2027.
