Man found guilty of attempted murder in 2024 Longueuil courthouse stabbing

A man has been convicted of attempted murder in the 2024 knife attack at the courthouse in Longueuil that seriously injured an interpreter.
Alexandre Garcés was found guilty Monday in the repeated stabbing of Hai Thach, with the judge determining the accused could be deemed criminally responsible despite his attempts to convince the court he had a mental disorder.
Court determined instead that Garcés was looking to go after someone connected to the justice system, which he had a grudge against.
Garcés, who was convicted of attempted murder and possession of a weapon, will now await sentencing.
On Jan. 9, 2024, Garcés entered the courthouse armed with knifes and stabbed Thach – who was reading in a cubicle – multiple times in the neck and upper body.
Garcés was not supposed to be at the courthouse at the time of the incident, either as an accused or as a witness. He did not know Thach.
The attack prompted Quebec courthouses to implement additional security measures, such as installing metal directors at the entrance.
