Swimmer found dead in Lac-Saint-Jean, bringing total drownings in Quebec to 30 so far in 2026

A 24-year-old man was found dead in Lac-Saint-Jean Monday after he went missing while swimming in Saint-Henri-de-Taillon, bringing the total drownings in the province so far this year to 30.

Sûreté du Québec (SQ) received a 911 call around 2:45 p.m. reporting a missing swimmer at a campsite near Île Belley.

“According to our information, there were several people swimming when one of them disappeared underwater and had not been seen since,” said SQ spokesperson Nancy Fournier. “At the scene, there were several lifeguards and firefighters, who began the search immediately.”

Around 9:45 p.m. SQ divers recovered the body of the 24-year-old.

“So far, everything suggests that this was, in fact, an accidental death,” Fournier added.

The coroner’s investigation is ongoing.

In a social media post, Camping et Plage Belley confirmed that the death occurred at their site and expressed condolences to the family of the victim.

Data from the Lifesaving Society of Quebec shows the number of drownings in the province so far is in line with what was observed last year at this time.
