Children evacuated after car ‘accidentally’ crashes into daycare in Brossard, no injuries

Children at a daycare in Brossard were evacuated after a car crashed “accidentally” into the building Friday, police said. Luckily, no one was physically injured.
Longueuil police (SPAL) received a 911 call around 10 a.m. reporting the incident at CPE Au pied de l’échelle on Boulevard de Rome.
The front facade of the daycare was damaged, with bricks having been dislodged and windows broken.
Police said the driver, a woman in her 60s, accidentally accelerated the car causing the vehicle to veer into the building. The driver was described to be in a state of shock after the incident.
“With all the elements we got when we got to the scene, we can confirm that it was an accident. It was not voluntarily, it was not something that was made purposely, it was really an accident,” said Jacqueline Pierre, a spokesperson for the Longueuil Police (SPAL).
The 61 children and 15 adults in the building were evacuated while the authorities made sure it was safe to re-enter. By around 1:30 p.m. police confirmed that the building was structurally safe and workers were onsite to start repairing the damage.
“When something like this happens right away, we get the visual inspections from the fire department. So when they checked, they probably said there’s something maybe wrong about the building,” explained Pierre, adding, “so what we did is that they evacuated the kids and afterwards they asked for somebody to come and confirm what was going on with the integrity of the building and afterwards they found out that it was nothing, it was only aesthetic.”
The daycare will remain closed for the rest of the day and it may be closed Monday as well.
The children were moved to a Longueuil city bus while waiting for their parents to pick them up – to get them out of the heat and keep them comfortable.
“The worst was avoided, but the event proved to be very anxiety-provoking for those directly and indirectly affected,” Anne-Marie Bellerose, President of the FIPEQ-CSQ. “We hope that everyone will recover quickly from this difficult situation. We wish them a quick return to normal,.”
