Canadian, U.S. firefighters face off in Firefit championship in Montreal

“The hardest part of this course is the mentality of it,” said Molly Brown, a firefighter trainee who took part in the FireFit championship in Montreal on Sunday.

More than 130 firefighters from across Canada and the United States faced off in simulated rescue contests in Angrignon Park this weekend.

The 5th Canadian Firefit championship tested the first responders’ skills and strength in a series of scenarios that replicate emergency situations.

“I think the hardest part of this course is actually like the mentality of it,” said Molly Brown, firefighter trainee. “It’s a hard, challenging course, and it takes a strong mental strength to get yourself through it, even when you feel like your body can’t do it anymore.”

The public event was organized by the Montreal Firefighters Association (APM) which represents over 2,400 firefighters across the island.

The event also featured a demonstration of a live vehicle extrication and an antique fire truck exhibition.

Members of the public also participated in running competitions — 1 km, 5 km, 10 km — and competed alongside the firefighters.

“As firefighters, we intervene hundreds of times a day across the island of Montreal, but we intervene in some of the worst moments in people’s lives,” said Chris Ross, president of the Montreal Firefighters Association. “We show up, fix the problem, leave, don’t have any time to exchange. So this allows the public to get down, spend a little bit more time with their firefighters, see what we do, and see some of the best firefighters across Canada competing on the Firefit national challenge.”

More than 130 first responders competed in the fifth Canadian Firefit championship at Angrignon Park.

“So what we try to reproduce is the first few minutes when we get on the scene of a fire,” said Ross.

There was several family-friendly free activities for the public, including, BBQ, inflatable games, face painting for children and giant games.
