Sûreté du Québec to intensify boating safety enforcement this weekend

Police departments across the province will intensify their enforcement efforts on risky behaviour by recreational boaters this weekend as summer activities on the water increase.
Dubbed the national coordinated operation, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said officials will target boaters who may endanger their own safety or those of others at the docks and on the water.
“In the majority of collisions, capsizings, and drownings, human behaviour is a major factor,” SQ said in a press release Friday.
“Knowing your boat and familiarizing yourself with its equipment during boating activities can help prevent unfortunate situations caused by inexperience.”
Officials also shared tips for safe sailing:
- Check the weather forecast before you set out, and plan your route if you’re unfamiliar with the area
- Make sure you have the required equipment for your water activity, if applicable. For example, every occupant is required to wear a personal flotation device that fits properly, regardless of the type of boat;
- Check whether any boating restrictions are in effect in the area and inform someone of your itinerary or activity (route, details about the boat and number of people on board, expected return time, etc.);
Authorities also advise refraining from consuming alcohol on board a boat. Alcohol consumption significantly increases the risk of death or injury and may result in penalties under the Criminal Code.
