A local driver is facing hefty penalties after being caught travelling nearly twice the posted speed limit on Highway 530 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Aug. 1, when officers from the MRC de Beauharnois–Salaberry station were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 530 West. Police say they intercepted a driver travelling at 175 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
The driver, a man from the region, was issued a $1,543 speeding ticket and had 14 demerit points added to his driving record. His driver’s licence was also suspended for seven days under Quebec’s administrative sanctions for excessive speeding.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is reminding motorists that speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes on the province’s roads.
