SQ calling on military after possible grenade discovered at Quebec campground

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) called on the Canadian Armed Forces to neutralize a suspected grenade that was discovered Tuesday in a campground in Montérégie.
SQ spokesman Louis-Philippe Ruel indicated that a person found the object around 10:30 a.m. and brought it to a building at the Lac Cristal campground in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle.
“It was a discovery the person made by chance,” Ruel explained, “while cleaning.” The individual did not threaten anyone.
Ruel stated that the object appeared to be a grenade and looked old, but that the police were unable to confirm its authenticity.
“As a preventative measure, a security perimeter has been established around the campsite,” said Ruel. “Access to the campsite, for both entry and exit, is impossible.”
A spokesperson for the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that a team specializing in the neutralization of explosives was en route to the scene to take charge of the object.
Abygail Bourgault-Lévesque explained that the team would first identify the suspected munition and determine if it could be safely transported to a military base for neutralization.
“However, if the object is deemed dangerous or unstable, specialists immediately take the necessary neutralization measures, which may include its controlled destruction on site or in a nearby secure location using military explosives,” she wrote in an email.
Although the email did not specify the nature of the object found at the Quebec campground, Bourgault-Lévesque noted that No. 36 grenades, also known as “Mills Bombs,” had been produced in large numbers during the last century for operational and training purposes.
“We remind the public that it is important to report any potentially dangerous military object to the authorities, including grenades, shells, ammunition or explosives, and to avoid any handling before it has been assessed by (explosives) specialists,” she wrote.
