Carney’s Liberals take all three byelections in Chicoutimi, Toronto and Vancouver

The Liberals have kept two of their seats and gained a third, winning all three federal byelections that were held Monday.
Daniel Gobeil will be the next MP for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, picking up a seat for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s narrow majority government.
Conservative Richard Martel, who was the MP for the region since 2018, stepped aside after being appointed to the Senate.
Liberal Tanveer Shahnawaz has also won the byelection in the Toronto riding of Beaches-East York.
The Beaches-East York seat, meanwhile, was once held by former cabinet minister Nate Erskine-Smith, who originally had said that he wanted to run for the provincial leadership but is instead running for Toronto City Council in the Oct. 26 municipal elections being held across Ontario.
Shahnawaz managed the constituency office for Nate Erskine-Smith, whose departure from federal politics prompted the vote.
In North Vancouver-Capilano, voters elected longtime Liberal political staffer Braeden Caley as a replacement for former Trudeau-era cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
Wilkinson decided to take a new appointment as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.
Elections Canada reported that thousands cast votes in advance polls — with 11,800 advance ballots in Beaches-East York, 11,000 in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord and 16,700 in North Vancouver-Capilano.
The federal Liberals needed to win just one of the three ridings in order to maintain their majority control in the House of Commons. According to the party standings, it has 170 seats.
