Union representing architects and architecture graduates loses case against City of Montreal

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

A union has just lost its case against the City of Montreal, which it accused of negotiating in bad faith.

The Administrative Labour Tribunal has indeed just rejected the complaint of the union, which represents architects and architecture graduates — a local section of the Union of Professional and Office Employees (SEPB), affiliated with the FTQ.

This union of about fifty members alleged that the City of Montreal was slowing down negotiations for the renewal of its collective agreement, was conducting a facade negotiation and was favouring negotiations with other unions.

The City is indeed bound by about ten union accreditations, some of which include thousands of workers.

After hearing the evidence, the Tribunal nevertheless dismissed the union’s complaint. It stated that, within the framework of these negotiations, the City is seeking solutions, proposing various avenues, and “genuinely participating in the dialogue, even though its budgetary framework is strict.”
