Strike avoided: Montreal’s blue-collar workers reach agreement in principle with city

Montreal’s blue-collar workers have reached an agreement in principle with the City of Montreal on a new collective agreement, preventing a seven-day strike at the deadline.
The city’s more than 6,000 blue-collar workers were scheduled to hit the picket lines on Tuesday. That strike has now been suspended.
The unionized workers will vote on the agreement in principle in the coming weeks.
“The blue-collar workers were patient and steadfast,” the union’s local chapter president Nicolas De Ciccio said in a news release. “Without a collective agreement for nearly two years, they held firm, and that is what led us to a settlement.”
The collective agreement for Montreal’s blue-collar workers expired on Jan. 1, 2025.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada called the agreement in principle “good news for Montreal.”
“I want to acknowledge the work done by both sides to reach this agreement,” she said. “It demonstrates the importance of dialogue and our ability to find solutions together – respecting employees while sharing a common goal of providing quality services to Montrealers.”
