Laval mayor says 13-hour brain tumour surgery was successful

Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer says a 13-hour operation to remove a golf ball-size tumour in his brain was successful.

He shared the news in a post on Instagram Wednesday, a day after telling his constituents wearing a hospital gown that he was heading into a risky surgery, but that he was confident.

“Right now, I look like a boxer who lost his match, but it’s quite the opposite,” he wrote. “Soon, I’ll be fully recovered and able to look to the future with optimism once again.”

The mayor’s recovery is expected to last two months. On Tuesday, the City of Laval announced that Ray Khalil, vice-chair of the Executive Committee, will take over the Boyer’s duties during his absence.

“I’m already looking forward to getting back to the office…talking about public finances and water systems—I love it!” Boyer wrote.

Thousands of supporters commented on the mayor’s post expressing relief and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Boyer, 38, announced his tumour diagnosis in the beginning of September. At the time, he said that he would reduce his public activities this fall to take care of himself, but that he would continue to fulfill his duties as mayor of Laval.
