Partial demolition of industrial building in Saint-Henri underway

The partial demolition of the historic Canada Malting plant in Montreal’s Saint-Henri neighbourhood is underway.

Work began Monday and is expected to wrap up Friday.

By Thursday morning, part of the building’s side facade had already been demolished.

The work follows an engineering report commissioned by the site’s developer, La Malterie Inc., which found the building was at imminent risk of collapse.

The public is being asked to avoid the area and respect safety barriers and signage. Restrictions remain in place on Saint-Ambroise Street and will be lifted once experts confirm there’s no danger to the public.

The developer plans to build 685 housing units on the site, with 20 per cent designated as social housing.

The plans also include green space, a grocery store and a pharmacy, while preserving the iconic pink house on the rooftop.
