Canada Post announces two changes affecting montrealers

Canada Post says two major changes are underway as it works to modernize its operations: the transition to community mailboxes and the introduction of weekend parcel delivery.

President and CEO Doug Ettinger said the corporation recognizes the importance of securing the future of the postal service at a critical moment for Canadians.

“At a time when the country is flexing its sovereignty by banding together, breaking down internal barriers and building a stronger future, having an organization like Canada Post is invaluable, an organization that can reach across the country and help pull it closer together,” Ettinger said.

Weekend parcel delivery

Canada Post says it has begun delivering parcels on weekends to homes in Ottawa and Montreal, with plans to expand the service to Toronto in late November.

The corporation aims to offer Saturday and Sunday deliveries to seven million households by the end of 2027. Other private carriers have offered weekend and evening deliveries for years.

Goodbye door-to-door delivery, hello community mailboxes

Canada Post also announced plans to transition from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes over the coming years.

Nearly four million addresses currently receiving door-to-door delivery will eventually be switched to community mailboxes. The corporation says the move is intended to improve the security of mail and parcels while reducing delivery costs.

The first addresses affected, in Sept-Îles, Que., and Winnipeg, Man., began receiving mail through community mailboxes earlier this week.

Canada Post says the changes are part of its efforts to rebuild customer trust as it competes with private carriers.

“The Corporation continues to face significant financial challenges, but we are turning the corner, and an important journey has begun. It will take time, but we are building a more financially sustainable partner for Canadians and a stronger Canada Post,” said Chief Financial Officer Rindala El-Hage.
