Three out of four drivers speed in Quebec school zone, CAA Quebec finds

Nearly three out of four drivers observed in a Quebec City school zone exceeded the posted speed limit, according to a new report from CAA-Quebec’s Foundation for Road Safety.

During an observation exercise on Oct. 7, 2026, researchers monitored 1,059 vehicles near École de la Chanterelle on Boulevard Pie-XI Nord, where the speed limit is 30 km/h. Some drivers were travelling above 40 km/h, while one was recorded at 69 km/h.

The average speed was approximately 36 km/h, with 75.2 per cent of vehicles exceeding the limit.

“Respecting the speed limit in school zones should become second nature, just like stopping at a red light,” said André Durocher, director of the CAA-Quebec Foundation.

Beyond speeding, observers recorded 64 other risky behaviours, including running red lights, failing to yield and making prohibited right turns on red. In two incidents, drivers ran red lights as a crossing guard was stepping into the roadway to escort children across.

The observations took place throughout the day, from 6:35 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. CAA-Quebec reported that speeding was more common around midday and toward the end of the school day.

The organization urges drivers to respect posted speed limits, follow crossing guards’ instructions and remain alert for children and other vulnerable road users.
