Thousands of Desjardins scheduled e-transfer transactions duplicated

Thousands of Desjardins customers were in for a surprise yesterday after scheduled e-transfers were duplicated and money was taken out twice.

The technical glitch came in on Nov. 1 coinciding with when customers typically schedule their Interac payments for rent and other monthly expenses.

In an email to CityNews, Desjardins spokesperson Jean-Benoît Turcotti confirmed that some of the scheduled transfers were processed twice.

“We’re asking any members affected to contact the recipient of a duplicated transfer and request that the duplicated amount be returned,” Turcotti said. “If that’s not possible, members are encouraged to contact us for assistance.”

If transfers have not been deposited to the recipients’ accounts, the senders can cancel it.

Turcotti says the bank’s IT teams were working on fixing the issue so it doesn’t happen again.
