Montreal’s Regional Public Health Department (DRSP) published a report Thursday highlighting the rise in online gambling among Montrealers, particularly young men.
Researchers found that while overall participation in gambling has declined, the use of online gambling platforms has increased. The proportion of Montreal adults who reported gambling online rose from 4.4 per cent in 2018 to 13.3 per cent in 2025.
The increase in online gambling is particularly notable among men aged 18 to 34, who are more likely to participate in online gambling activities, including casino games, sports betting and poker.
The study was conducted in collaboration with Concordia University’s Research Chair in the Study of Play. Researchers surveyed 500 Montreal adults in 2025 and 2026.
About 38 per cent of Montrealers reported using only unregulated gambling websites, while 16 per cent said they use both Loto-Québec platforms and unregulated sites.
Researchers also found that a large proportion of Montrealers believe online advertising for gambling websites should be prohibited or more strictly regulated.
