Arrest made in attempted murder case of SPVM officer

Montreal Police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Ali Ngarukiye in Toronto on Thursday, in connection with the attack on an SPVM officer Jan. 28 in Parc-Extension.

MONTREAL – A 21-year-old man was arrested in Toronto Thursday in relation to an attack on an SPVM officer.

Montreal police held a late press conference to announce Ali Ngarukiye’s arrest.

“Investigators from the major crimes section of the SPVM arrested the suspect in connection with the attempted murder on police officer Sanjay Vig,” said SPVM inspector David Shane.

Vig was completing an intervention on Jan. 28 in Parc-Extension when he was suddenly attacked.

Police say searches are ongoing in Toronto where the suspect was arrested.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in Montreal court Friday to faces charges of attempted murder, intentionally unloading a prohibited firearm, disarming a police officer, aggravated assault on a peace officer and vehicle theft.

Officers in Montreal say Ngarukiye is known to Ontario police and has a record for fraud.

Back in January, authorities quickly and wrongfully arrested Mamadi Fara Camara.

He spent six days detained and charged with a crime he did not commit.

Police eventually admitted they had the wrong person and publicly apologizing to Camara and his family.

“This arrest will, we hope, help restore a sense of tranquility and peace. For both the victim, agent Sanjay Vig, and the population of Montreal. We also have a special thought for Mr. Camara: we hope that the arrest of the real suspect in this case will allow him to close a chapter on this event which had important consequences for him as well,” he said.

Vig’s weapon, which was taken during the attack, has yet to be found.
