The Montreal Children’s Hospital is preparing to welcome young Ukrainian cancer patients, who they say are “fleeing for their lives, while fighting for their lives,” and asking for your donations to help.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation launched a campaign earlier this week to raise funds that will help to pay for accommodations, travel to and from the hospital, meals, medication, psychological support and translation services.

“The hospital came to us this week and basically told us we’re going to receive some patients initially that have cancer from Ukraine and their families, can you help? Because they’re going to come in with only the clothes on their backs,” explained Renée Vézina, President, The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation said on Friday to CityNews. “We reached out to the Montreal community which is such a generous community.”

“Young cancer patients forced from their homes and whose crucial treatment has been interrupted by war will soon arrive in Montreal to receive life-saving treatment at The Montreal Children’s Hospital,” says the hospital’s foundation website.

It’s still unclear how many patients will be treated by the Children’s or when, as details are still being worked out. It was the federal minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship that approached pediatric hospitals throughout Canada to help.

“Right now, I know everybody wants to do something for Ukraine and this is such a concrete way for Montrealers to actually do something. We’re going to be welcoming these families,” said Vézina.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital spokesperson and former Habs’ star P.K. Subban will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. Subban putting a call out on his social media accounts.
