LaSalle’s Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Montreal’s well-known Sikh temple, held its annual Nagar Kirtan Parade on Sunday.
The Sikh community of LaSalle joined hundreds of thousands across Canada to celebrate Vaisakhi – a major celebration for the Sikhs.
The spring festival happens in mid-April every year.
It is a day to celebrate 1699, the year when Sikhism was born as a collective faith, the harvest season in northern India and the Indian solar new year.
Many walking through the streets of LaSalle enjoyed the parade and processions called Nagar Kirtan.
‘Nagar’ means town and ‘kirtan’ means the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the Sikh holy book.
The book was carried in the processions in a place of honour.
Celebrations included singing and music, as well as reading scriptures out loud and chanting hymns.
