Second REM service interruption on first official day running

It was a difficult first day for Montreal’s new light-rail transit system with, not one, but two service interruptions.

After service was interrupted on the Reseau express metropolitain (REM) for more than an hour during the morning rush hour, a second outage occurred late Monday evening.

REM officials confirmed the breakdown occurred around 11 p.m. and lasted about an hour.

“The problem encountered was similar to that of the morning and the technical teams are investigating the situation,” REM officials said in a statement.

Passengers had to take shuttles to get to the various stations on the South Shore section of the network. The REM did not announce this service interruption on its communication channels, but many transit users took to social media to share the news.

REM spokesperson Jean-Vincent Lacroix said on Monday that a break-in period was necessary for the entry into service of the new public transport system.

Tuesday morning’s REM service was not affected by Monday evening’s interruption.
