A street race may have been behind an accident that claimed the life of a teenager in Longueuil on Wednesday morning.
It happened at the height of rush hour – around 7:40 a.m. – on route 116 west – between Édouard and Taschereau boulevards.
Police say numerous witnesses reportedly saw the two teen drivers going at very high speeds.
One lost control and their car crossed three lanes, then collided with a low concrete wall, flipped several times, hitting a Hydro-Québec pole and ended up in a ditch.
The teen was rushed to hospital – where he later died.
The other driver involved is being met by investigators.
The accident caused serious traffic delays forcing the closure of route 116 towards Montreal as of route 112.
As of 12 p.m. Wednesday the closure was still in effect. SPAL is asking motorists to avoid the area.
Police say the investigation is still in its initial stages.
