Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante in New York for Climate Week

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL – Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante will be in New York for Climate Week, which runs until Sunday.

Plante will take part, as co-chair, in a meeting of the steering committee of the C40 network, which brings together cities committed to the ecological transition. The mayors of London, Paris, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Nairobi and Dakar are also taking part.

The mayor will talk about the Montreal Commitment, a declaration signed by 61 cities at last year’s COP15 on the preservation of ecosystems.

She will also give a speech at the Nasdaq annual conference on sustainable finance on Tuesday.

On the same theme, a panel discussion organized by Montréal International, Finance Montréal and Investissement Québec International will take place. Plante will be taking part, along with a dozen other organizations.

“We can no longer talk about climate without talking about finance. And we certainly can’t talk about finance without talking about the climate. Sustainable finance will be at the heart of this mission, which is a great opportunity to showcase Montreal’s initiatives, draw inspiration from best practices and create new partnerships,” stressed Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante in a press release.

An economic announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, with a company announcing its expansion in Montreal.

On Wednesday, Plante will be at the United Nations headquarters for a round table on the ecological transition.

She won’t be the only Quebec politician in New York this week. Quebec Premier François Legault has been invited by Secretary General Antonio Guterres to attend the UN General Assembly and participate in the first Summit on Climate Ambition.

Environment Minister Benoit Charette will also be in attendance throughout the week.

Discussions will also take place between the Mayor of Montreal and the Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, on topics such as the ecological transition, homelessness, housing, transportation and security.

On Thursday, Plante will attend the Strong Cities Network World Summit, chaired by Adams. She is scheduled to give the closing address on the theme “Building resilience and social cohesion: the role of cities in addressing polarization”.
