The Lasso Montreal festival is here!
CityNews caught up with Quebecer Matt Lang. He’ll be taking the stage at Parc Jean Drapeau on Saturday.
“I’m going to shake my mullet for you guys, so you have to be there,” said singer-songwriter, Matt Lang.
Lang is from Maniwaki – almost 300 kilometres north west of Montreal. He always dreamed of bringing a piece of Nashville home to Quebec.
“My dream was to, you know, do some country music. And when I was young, I went to fishing trips and hunting trips with my family. And we always, always listened to country music. So that’s why today I’m doing, you know, that kind of music, because I like that, I love that. And I did some French music in the past, but for, you know, radio stations and all that stuff. But I was like, I just want to do what I want. And I’m here now,” said Lang.
In 2018, Lang ventured off to Nashville, the music city! He was set to record his first English-language album, but didn’t speak a word of English.
“That was the biggest challenge in my life: first of all, learning English. Because, as you can see, it’s not my first language. And after that, I learned that beautiful language. Then I went to Tennessee because I was like, you know, my goal is to be a country artist, and I did it,” said Lang.
This isn’t Lang’s first rodeo. He also took to the Lasso stage in 2022 for the festival’s first edition. This year he is taking on the role of the festival’s spokesperson.
“It’s my first time. For me, I feel lucky, and I don’t know, it’s just like I feel lucky and happy at the same time,” said Lang.
Country music will always have a place in Lang’s heart.
“It’s love, road trip, family, friends. It’s all of those words are, you know, for me, it’s, it’s just life,” said Lang.
Be sure to stay roped in, and check out Lang’s performance on Saturday.
“It’s a huge party, and you want to be there,” he said.
